Black History Month Children’s Book Round-Up

February is Black History Month, a time to honour and celebrate the legacy of Black people and their communities. The 2023 theme for Black History Month is “Ours to Tell”. This theme represents an opportunity to engage in open dialogue and a commitment to learning more about the stories and experiences of Black communities in Canada and beyond. 

In line with this year’s theme we’re sharing a round-up of recommended children’s books written by Black authors.

Sulwe - Lupita Nyong'o: from Academy Award–winning actress Lupita Nyong’o, Sulwe is a picture book about colorism, self-esteem, and learning that beauty comes from within.

Hair Love - Matthew A. Cherry: Hair Love is a beautiful story on loving your natural hair, and a celebration of fathers and daughters everywhere. 

Our Skin: A First Conversation About Race - Megan Madison: this first book in the series begins the conversation on race with your little ones.

Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History - Vashti Harrison: featuring 40 trailblazing Black women in the world's history, this book shares true stories of women who broke boundaries and exceeded all expectations.

I Am Enough - Grace Byers: beautifully illustrates the practice of loving who you are, respecting others and being kind to one another.

ABCs of Black History - Rio Cortez: “R is for rise, to reach for the top. Relentlessly striving, refusing to stop Like ballplayers, boxers, and gymnasts who fly. Like presidents and justices who dared to ask why?” A refreshing ABC book filled with celebration of Black history and culture.

Viola Desmond Won’t Be Budged! - Jody Nyasha Warner: a vibrant illustrated retelling of Viola Desmond story.
